Week 22 - July 8-12, 2002

July 12…. We went to Oklahoma with the idea that maybe I could finish the deck on this trip. Well, we got all the posts up, framework finished, floor down, but then things slowed down somewhat when it came to the handrail. We finally decided to put it up with the tops of the posts protruding through the handrail and then install post caps that match the style of the house. Jan was afraid it would get too busy looking if we put post caps on all the posts, so we decided to put on 18 caps and leave 22 posts that would not be any higher than the handrail itself. We got a couple of post caps and put them on to see how they would look.

The deck turned out to be just over 1500 sq. ft. It completely surrounds the house on three sides. On the front deck, it is just over 12 ft. tall, so it will provide a nice shaded area for a patio table underneath.
While Judd kept working on the handrail, Jan and I went into Ft. Smith looking for a new fireplace. (The one we had originally chosen just was not going to work out.) We found one, but delivery was going to be a problem. We needed it right away so the masonry guys could get started rocking around the firebox. Of course the fireplace store didn't have any rope to tie the fireplace into the back of my mom's truck for the 30 mile journey home, but they provided me with lots of string. I tied it on as best I could, although this reminds me somewhat of a scene from the Beverly Hillbillies tv show.
We finally ran out of time and had to load up the airplane for the flight back. The weather was terrible in Houston, so we flew the Baron over to Tulsa and left it there. We will pick it up Wednesday next week and go back to the house to see what progress has been made. I did buy a video camera to take some video of the house. Jan took some nice video of the house as we flew by on the way to Tulsa. If I can ever figure out how to get it uploaded to the web, I will try to do so.
