Week 25 - July 29-August 2, 2002

(Charlie's busy flying so this week's installment comes from Jan's point of view.) Once again we thought we might take a week off but we found ourselves at the job site and busy as ever! The sheetrockers are working with less than a full crew so progress is slow but impressive. The rooms are really taking shape, both upstairs and down. We put up the last of the insulation in the basement so it is ready when they are. The rock layer is working inside on the fireplace during the 100 degree heat, he will hopefully continue on the chimney next week. He is very particular about the rocks he uses and we are very pleased with the look. One visitor asked if we had shipped the river rock all the way from Colorado! (How's that for a plug for cultured stone?) One design note here: the electrician has wired in an electrical box that will be inset flat into the mantel for plugging in lamps, decorations, Christmas lights, etc.

Judd has continued helping with the deck handrail and it is really changing the look of the deck and house. Each picket must be cut, routered and drilled. Charlie and I were able to finish the almost 500 pickets thanks to a cloudy day that allowed us to work all afternoon. Our front deck has become the workshop with power tools and sawhorses.
We also designed the wooden arch supports for the porches. By using 2 x 12 cedar boards ,we were able to get a nice curve and a graceful end piece. By nailing two 2 x 12's together we should get the feel of timber that we want. And since we need 21 arches times 2, that means cutting out 42 arches! Charlie bought a brand new saber saw to achieve this next step. Doesn't look like we'll take time off next week either!
