Week 3 - February 25-28, 2002

February 25th - Jan is coming back from a visit in Amarillo today. I leave for a show in Dallas that runs through the 28th, so I will leave this installment to her.

(Jan) ............ The call comes from Judd that the equipment will arrive at 7:30 am Wednesday the 27th to begin dirt work.  Now I can truly answer "yes" to the question "Have you started your house, yet?"  I wish we were closer to the site, I would have to check on it everyday!

Wednesday morning dawns with record low temperatures (even in Houston) which means a delay on the beginning of excavation.  Judd calls to question the placement of the driveway.  We want to be careful not to abuse the neighbor's drive or the runway access.  We decide to move the driveway over about 20 ft. or so, depending on trees and attempt to describe this to Judd over the phone.  The joy of long distance building!

Charlie's Mom, Dorothy, who lives about 12 miles on the other side of the lake is alerted that Thursday the 28th will be a picture day to capture the first day on film (or pixels in this case).

I have been collecting paint samples to try to decide on the exterior colors. We will be using the Hardie plank siding and shake shingle, but I want it to have a natural look, so I may have to buy some samples to try it out.  Although is seems that there is plenty of time for those decisions, I know the more we have it narrowed down, the easier it will be when the time comes.  And by the way, no Valentine yet, the hangar is not getting any bigger!

(Charlie) .............. I'm back. My Mom sent the following pictures and the dirtwork finally got started. Jan is saving rocks of all things! I asked Judd to dig up the largest one he could that even remotely resembled a heart for Valentines Day. He left it exposed so that I could get a picture of it. Happy Valentine's Day, Jan! You can click on the pictures below to see them larger. The picture of the large rock looks particularly good enlarged. Nice job Judd!

I called Judd on the 28th after the initial dirt work was complete. There were no major problems with rocks which is good news. We were concerned that large rocks may have to be blasted out with dynamite and add greatly to the expense, so we were somewhat relieved that the dirt work went so smoothly. Another bit of good news is that after re-surveying the lot and moving a little dirt, it was determined that the extra 10' needed to allow room for the hangar worked out fine (see week 1). Probably a retaining wall will need to be built by the hangar for drainage. Judd hopes the digging will be finished tomorrow and next week Calvin can start framing for the foundation. We'll see. Jan and I plan on visiting the site Monday or Tuesday of next week to determine the final placement of the driveway among other things.
