Week 33 - September 23-27, 2002

Monday, Sept. 23: Charlie and I stop for coffee and hear chainsaws somewhere close by. We need two dead trees removed so we drive toward the noise and find a tree crew just a few blocks away. After a short discussion, the owner agrees to come up the mountain and cut down and remove our trees. Watching the five man crew was like watching a choreographed dance, each knew exactly what the others were doing and could anticipate each move. The two fifty-foot trees were cut down, loaded, the branches shredded and hauled off in less than an hour! If only all the jobs we need done could be this easy! The house looks a little naked without the trees but the view of the lake is even better and we will plant some different trees to add color in the spring and fall.

As the week progresses, Judd makes great strides on cabinetry. The coffee bar and telephone booth are done and he starts on the TV cabinet beside the fireplace. With all this work, we are running low on maple, so we get another delivery of maple that is wider and longer for trim boards. We help Charlie's mom get ready for the sale that starts on Friday during the day and then plane more wood in the evenings. The weather has been beautiful and the deck in the evenings is fabulous even if we are using it as the workshop. I'm not sure the neighbors enjoy the noise, but so far no one has complained.

On Thursday, we meet with the granite installer, who measures and lays out the sink and faucet locations in the kitchen. We are learning that being 60 miles from Tulsa generally requires a travel fee just to get someone out to measure so we need to be pretty confident of our choices before asking them to come out. The installer for the bathroom surfaces has delayed his trip until next Monday, so I'll have to be here then.

Charlie met with the hangar builder and decided to commit but will contract the concrete work out himself. Judd had a concrete crew stop by and they will be able to do it as soon as they get their hay in for the fall!

Just when I think the exterior paint is right, I see it in a different light and want to change. The painter thought he had matched the Cabot colors we had chosen but when I saw them on the house, they were not close enough. I convinced Gary Kimball the painter (brother to the sheetrocker) to use Cabot solid stain to get the richer look. He reluctantly agreed but said I would have to order the paint thought the lumberyard. I called to make the order and found out that Cabot is not easy to get in this part of the US. Not only will it take two weeks to get it, the cost keeps going up because of the mixing fees for the colors I have chosen! We decide to paint samples of the Cabot stain on a Hardie plank board and take that to the paint store to try to match. With the garage sale Friday through Sunday, I will have to wait until Monday to take the sample to Fort Smith.

Charlie leaves for Houston Friday morning and then he's on to San Antonio to work at a trade show. I'll stay to help with the big sale.
