The Houston Area Parkinson Society (HAPS) was formed in 1975 as a non profit organization to increase public awareness of Parkinsonism, a disease which afflicts more than 1.0 million people in America. HAPS was formed by patients, caregivers, and doctors at Baylor College of Medicine and provides the community with information about Parkinsons disease, offers physical, speech and water therapy to Parkinsonians, sponsors group meetings for patients and caregivers and raises funds for these support group activities. HAPS five year goal is to become an organization that has a strong professional and volunteer base and the resources to make HAPS services available throughout the Houston metropolitan area. This will involve the creation of a defined system involving medical and other providers that assure information and service dissemination to as many Parkinsonians and families as possible.HAPS currently sponsors ten support groups around the Houston area, ten weekly no fee exercise and speech therapy programs, three water therapy classes, a HAPS golf league, a World Golf Tournament, and a clinic supported by the USGA. Our monthly news letter has about 1000 recipients. Weekly exercise classes attract between 100-200 people with our largest support group attracting 50 or more attendees. You are visitor #
